Perfect positioning for style and comfort

One of the most asked questions my clients have is “How should I wear my headpiece?” My answer varies depending on the design but these are my general recommendations to help you achieve a secure and comfortable fit.

I often use an elastic or headband for pieces that are lightweight. Combs and grips are also ideal to secure more complex or elaborate pieces that have a bit more weight to them. It's important to place them strategically, so the headpiece comfortably stays in place and doesn't shift while being worn. If your headpiece doesn’t feel secure, take it off and look for the tiny bow to check that the back of the headpiece is sitting in the correct place.

Combs, headbands and clips should be as invisible as possible, so it's important to consider your hairstyle when choosing headpieces. Chignons and ponytails can handle more weight, while loose hair may require a headband with more strategic placement of combs or clips.

Keep in mind that we offer a complimentary customisation service when you purchase your headwear. Add your haircolour from the dropdown menu before you 'Add to Cart' and we'll choose the comb, elastic and/or band that best suits your hair colour.

Most of my perchers, berets and cocktail hats are designed to sit at an angle, creating balance and framing the face. I recommend wearing your piece one finger-width above the right eyebrow.

Smaller cocktail styles such as pillbox designs may be worn centred, either toward the front or the back of the head.

Securing your piece

Your Jo Ramsay piece may be fitted with an elastic, combs, a headband or a combination of these.

Elastics should be positioned at the back of your head and concealed beneath your hair.

If your headwear has a comb, slide it into the hair against the direction of growth, then settle the headpiece comfortably into place. If you feel you’d like to make your piece more secure, hairspray, backcombing and/or two crossed hair slides will help lock the comb securely so that your piece remains in place.

Wear your headwear with confidence as an extension of your personal style. It should feel comfortable, secure and entirely your own.

How do I care for my investment piece?

Caring for your headpiece is essential to ensuring it lasts a lifetime. Here's how to keep your headpiece in its best condition:

Handle carefully: Always handle millinery gently to avoid bending or mis-shaping its structure.

Avoid moisture: Handcrafted millinery is susceptible to damage from moisture. Keep your hat dry and avoid wearing it in rainy or humid conditions.

Store properly: Store your headpiece in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use a hat box or a breathable bag to protect it from dust and potential damage. Never store millinery unless it's completely dry.

Keep clean: Use a very soft-bristled brush to remove dust from your headpiece. Do not use any chemicals or cleaners, as they may damage the fabrics and materials. Accidents do happen so if your headpiece needs cleaning, refreshing or repairing, contact us for a quote.

Avoid Heat: Do not place your millinery in areas with direct heat, such as a closed car, as excessive heat can cause damage.

How can I measure my head size?

Most of our pieces are designed to fit all. To determine your head size for hats with a size measurement, use a metric tape-measure placed around your head at the exact position your headpiece will sit.
